The Herring Festival Art Show is a popular annual community event on Hornby Island, British Columbia, Canada. Celebrating the return of Pacific herring to the Salish Sea and raises funds for marine conservation.
I submitted these 4 baskets for the show. Half the proceeds from sales go to Conservancy Hornby Island’s herring protection and marine stewardship work. The show featured marine-and herring-themed original artwork from local artists using wide range of media with over 200 submissions.
Hornby Island’s HerringFest began in 2017 to honour Pacific herring as a foundational species in the coastal ecosystem. These fish support everything from microorganisms to whales, seabirds, and human communities, while also holding deep cultural importance for local Indigenous groups. The festival highlights the herring’s ecological role and the need to protect spawning habitats (such as eelgrass beds) from threats like roe fisheries.
